What Others Are Saying

By my ordering more 33-pt, you can see I definitely think there’s something to it.  Here in Ala we don’t have any rut to speak of until late January (to early Feb…i.e., after the season ends Jan 31st), so I haven’t tried to use Doe-n-Heat or the other buck lure yet.  Yesterday, however, out of 5 hunters, I was the only one using any scent cover/attractant.  No one saw anything of any merit in the afternoon…except for me.  Conditions were virtually no wind…not too ideal.  Nevertheless, I had 5 (3 doe, 2 fawns) come out from the woods 10 yds away from me w/i 10 min of getting into the stand and spraying the initial 60-second cover scent.  They got w/i 15 feet and spent at least 20-30 min eating so close to me I could’ve spit on them.  Every time they looked like they’d bust me, I’d spray about 5-8 seconds…and they’d go right back to eating.  When I concluded I was wasting 33-pt on a group of non-shooters, I quit spraying.  Within 5-8 min, they busted me and took off.  I sprayed it again about 20 min later…and 3 of the same deer came back!  It was kinda fun playing the “Turn it on and watch ‘em come in, turn it off and watch them leave” game.

Meanwhile, 7 more (again, does and fawns) came out from across the field about 60 yds away.  Don’t know if my scent (or the 33-pt) had gotten over there w/the no-wind situation, but they generally stayed over there.  Finally, shortly before sundown, what looked like a large doe came running directly twds me from the far side of the field stopping about 15 yds short of the stand.  Turned out to be a 1-1/2 yr buck with 8-10” spikes.  He had absolutely no reason for coming to me (rape and other things were planted equally around the field) other than possibly the 33-pt.  I sprayed off and on for the next 20 min before running out of spray.*  While doing so, he came w/i spitting distance frequently raising his nose to smell.  Within 7-8 min of me running out of the spray, he busted me.

Harvest? Nothing b/c we have an 8-pt or better rule on this property.  That said, I was the only one who saw any substantive activity—a total of 15-20 deer in a 2-hr period—and I tend to think it was related to the 33-pt.  Looking fwd to trying more as it gets colder here…and the bucks start doing their scrape/rub activity.

Again, thanks.
