Try some of the pet rescue locations.  Have seen some great dogs come from these.

If you want a good bird dog, you're not going to find it cheap.

1st thing to do is select the breed that you want. I have had pointers and brittanies and would highly recommend the brittany since they are easier to train and try to please you. The English pointers I had were uniformly hard-headed and wanted to run into the next county.
Best bet is to contact breeders who only produce hunting stock .. no show dogs. Get the puppy at 7 weeks and start training it right away .. nothing serious, just introduction to the family, other dogs, bird wings, etc.
If you don't know how to train a bird dog, use a pro and work with him.

you can get lucky at the pound.  our black lab mix is about the best dog we ever had, easy to train, and hunts well.  he came from the animal shelter.  he aint no show dog, he is a dang good bird dog.  it take time, an you have to work with the dog.

Well finding a bird dog is not that hard but is pricey.  What exactly will you being doing with said dog?  How much time do you have to work with this dog? how much experience do you have training bird dogs?  these are all questions you need to ask yourself before looking for a dog.  Oh just to inform yall i do breed raise and train chessies and I am currently working with  a brittney.  So i have a little insight into the hunting dog thing, but by no stetch of the imagination am i an expert.  Noww that beeing said if you ask yourself these questions and research a breed that will fit your answers there are links on the akc website to breeders web pages.  also try craigslist.  some breeders post adds on there. also if you go to the akc website and look up hunt tests or other shows and go you can meet breeders.  also do some research into the perticular breed you want for possible health issues and find out if the place you get the dog from tests for it.  if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a pm.

Blaster:

I don't have any first-hand knowledge about Chessies but have seen some with very "hard heads". Seemed stubborn.
You won't find that with your Brittany. They are great dogs and easy to train.

You'll be surprised at what they can do. Some are accomplished retrievers too.

yes chessies hard hard to train because they tend to do things their own way.  they are probebly the hardest breed to train but if done correctly they are worth the time you put into them.  As for the brittany (winchester) i havent had to do much with him.  he picked things up by watching me work our other dogs and can find a bird with no problem.  he is just over a year old and the wife brought him out to work with our quails cause i cant due to a deployment and he caught it out of the air after he found and jumped it. i think he will be a great dog for me to bring out to the dove field and walk all the pblic lands with.

Sounds good .. but where do you find wild quail nowadays? Lack of quail was the reason I went from Brittanies to Boykins. I used to have a covey in my back pasture but that was 20 years ago.

i am in the process of raising some to re-introduce them onto my land and all of the surrounding. so i use them. there use to be a good population but the coyote population has got out of control causeing the quails to get killed off.  also there are some public lands in oklahoma that have them release onto them.  im gonna talk to a wildlife biologist at the wma that i hunt and see about donating some for there as well.  of course i gotta get the coyote population down first.
