Hey I'm from North Carolina and I'm interested in deer farming on a small scale.  I would like to breed a few deer to get better genetics where I live.  I don't know anyone around my area that deer farms so I don't know a thing about it.  I've heard it can be a great way of improving deer size in areas where genetics can be poor.  My idea would be to breed deer to release into the wild and to keep them as wild as possible.  Is this the basic idea of deer farming? Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to know good places to get starter deer and things like types of fences to keep deer in, breeding tips, ect...

I think most of the deer farms in our area raise the deer to sell either the sperm to other deer farmers or the entire deer to farms in like Texas that want to improve their herds.  Others will sell them to people who cage hunt and want to be insured they get a big mount with little effort and price is no object.  Makes me sick.

Not sure about your state but in Ohio it is aginst the law to put a wild deer in a pin or let a pin raised deer into the wild.

No penning and releaseing here in alabama plus they cost way to much for my poaching neighbors to kill.
